The rapid growth of artificial intelligence and large-scale AI data centers is creating a new wave of demand for optical fiber. Unlike previous growth cycles driven mainly by 5G and fiber-to-the-home deployment, today's demand increasingly comes from high-speed optical interconnection inside data centers.
As AI models become larger, thousands of GPUs may need to work together and exchange massive amounts of data. This is driving rapid growth in east-west traffic and increasing the need for high-speed optical connections between GPUs, servers, and switches.

Supply Constraints Support Higher Prices
While demand is growing rapidly, fiber supply cannot be expanded at the same speed. Fiber preform manufacturing requires advanced technology, significant investment, and a relatively long capacity expansion cycle. After several years of weaker market conditions, industry capacity expansion has also remained relatively cautious.
The result is a short-term supply-demand imbalance, which has contributed to rising fiber demand and prices. However, as new production capacity comes online over the next few years, supply is expected to gradually improve, and standard fiber products may face renewed price competition.
