Why Is Fiber Recoating Important?
Fiber optics are the backbone of modern telecommunications, fiber laser systems, data centers, and many industrial applications. While most attention is given to splicing quality and transmission performance, fiber recoating is another essential process that directly affects the mechanical strength and long-term reliability of optical fibers.
During fiber splicing or repair, the original protective coating must be removed to expose the bare glass fiber. A fiber coating machine restores this protection by applying a UV-curable resin around the repaired section, rebuilding the fiber's protective layer after the recoating material is cured.
Recoating restores the mechanical strength of bare fibers and protects them from bending, tension, moisture, and surface damage. A properly recoated fiber offers improved durability, environmental resistance, and long-term stability, making it suitable for demanding industrial applications.
Fiber recoating and heat shrink sleeves provide different types of protection. Recoating rebuilds the fiber's original protective coating and becomes part of the fiber structure, while heat shrink sleeves provide external mechanical reinforcement for the splice point.
